Association of Blood Culture Results with C - reactive protein, Procalcitonin, And Serum Lactate Levels in Patients with Suspected Sepsis: a Prospective Observational Study

Abstract

Background: Sepsis presents a critical diagnostic challenge where timely biomarker analysis is paramount before microbiological results become available.

Methods: A prospective observational study of 300 patients with suspected sepsis evaluated C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT), and serum lactate alongside blood culture findings.

Results: Blood cultures were positive in 32.0% (n=96) of cases, predominantly Gram-negative pathogens (65.6%). PCT showed the strongest discriminatory ability for positive cultures (AUC 0.812), followed by serum lactate (AUC 0.724) and CRP (AUC 0.681).

Conclusion: Combined biomarker assessment, with particular reliance on PCT, offers strong complementary diagnostic power while blood cultures remain pending.
