Abstract

Background: Melasma is a common acquired disorder of facial hyperpigmentation that predominantlyaffects women and usually involves sun-exposed areas of the face. Since the pigment is primarilycontained in the superficial epidermal layers, epidermal melasma tends to respond well to topicaltherapy. Topical agents such as tretinoin and azelaic acid are generally used and their relative effectiveness may differ depending on skin type, sun exposure and tolerance.
