Introduction: Swine influenza is a highly contagious respiratory disease of pigs caused by one of several swine influenza A viruses. Outbreaks are common in pigs year round and infection in humans is a result of close contact with infected animals. The H1N1 virus outbreak had previously occurred India during the 2009 flu pandemic. The virus killed 981 people in 2009 and 1763 in 2010. The mortality decreased in 2011 to 75. It claimed 405 lives in 2012 and 699 lives in 2013. In 2014, a total of 218 people died from the H1N1 flu, India recorded 837 laboratory confirmed cases in the year. The main aim of the study was to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding swine flu and its prevention among selected high school students in kuppam, Chittoor (district), A.P.
Methodology: A true experimental research approach is adopted to assess the knowledge regarding swine flu and its prevention was used and true experimental pre test and post test with control group design was used. In this study knowledge of high school students on swine flu and its prevention. Was dependent variables. Questionnaire was used to determine the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on swine flu and its prevention among high school students.
Results: After analysis of responses In experimental group 19(63%) were inadequate knowledge level, 11(37%) were in moderate knowledge level and in control group 17(57%) were in inadequate, 13(43%) were in moderate knowledge level. In pre test 19(63%) were inadequate knowledge level, 11 (37%) were in moderate knowledge level and in post test 7(23%) were in moderate level, 23 (77%) were in adequate knowledge level in experimental group.
Conclusion: It is concluded that by using Mc Nemar chi square test was used to compare the pre and post test knowledge level of the high school students, the P value is was 0.001which was statistically significant. The results shows that the post test knowledge scores are higher than the pretest knowledge scores in experimental group is found to be significant, i.e. the structured teaching programme was effective regarding swine flu and its prevention among high school students.
