Abstract

Background: Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) is a multimodal, evidence-based perioperative care pathway originally developed for elective colorectal resection and now extended to elective and emergency laparotomy more broadly. Conventional postoperative care, characterized by prolonged fasting, routine nasogastric decompression, delayed mobilization, and opioid-based analgesia, remains widespread despite accumulating evidence favoring the enhanced recovery approach.
