Background: Secondary peritonitis is a surgical emergency, and reported mortality runs anywhere from 6% to 60% depending on the cause and the patient's condition. The Mannheim Peritonitis Index (MPI) combines clinical and operative findings into a single prognostic score, but it has been validated in only a limited number of populations. We assessed how accurately the MPI predicts mortality and
postoperative complications in patients undergoing emergency laparotomy for secondary peritonitis.
