Traditional Gravity Embalming Technique for Effective Cadaver Preservation

Background: Cadaveric dissection remains the cornerstone of anatomy education and continues to provide an irreplaceable learning experience for undergraduate and postgraduate medical students. Although digital anatomy, virtual dissection tables, and three-dimensional simulation technologies have advanced considerably, preserved human cadavers remain indispensable for understanding anatomical relationships, anatomical variations, tissue characteristics, and surgical anatomy. Effective cadaver preservation is therefore fundamental to anatomy teaching and research. Traditional gravity embalming is one of the oldest arterial embalming techniques and continues to be widely practiced because of its simplicity, affordability, and reliability, particularly in resource-limited medical institutions.
Objective: To review the principles, historical evolution, and educational importance of the traditional gravity embalming method for human cadaver preservation.
Methods: This narrative review was developed from the author's original manuscript together with recent literature on cadaver preservation, anatomy education, and embalming practices. Current evidence published between 2021 and 2026 was incorporated to provide an updated perspective while maintaining the classical principles of gravity embalming.
Results: Traditional gravity embalming utilizes hydrostatic pressure to distribute embalming fluid through the arterial system without mechanical pumps. The method requires minimal equipment, low maintenance costs, and no electricity, making it particularly suitable for medical colleges with limited infrastructure. Despite the availability of modern soft-fix and pump-assisted embalming techniques, gravity embalming continues to provide satisfactory long-term preservation for routine anatomical dissection and teaching (1–4).
Conclusion: Traditional gravity embalming remains a practical, economical, and effective technique for preserving human cadavers. Continuous refinement of embalming solutions, safety practices, and standardized protocols will further improve its role in anatomy education and research.
